West Sumatra


Hello guys, I'm gonna tell you about some unique West Sumatra cultures in this posting...

West Sumatra



West Sumatra is one of the most beautiful areas of Indonesia. The area is about 425.75 km². It borders the provinces of North Sumatra (Sumatera Utara) to the north, Riau and Jambi to the east, and Begkulu to the southeast. It includes the Mentawai Islands off the coast. The capital of West Sumatra is Padang.

There are some popular places to visit in West Sumatra such as Museum Adityawarman, Jam Gadang dan Benteng Fort de Kock, Goa Jepang, Taman Siti Nurbaya, Kepulauan Mentawai, Pantai Air Panas, Danau Maninjau, Danau Singkarak, Lembah Harau, Lembah Anai, Krang Tirta and Puncak Lawang.

Traditional Dances

One of the most popular traditional dance of West Sumatra is Tari Piring. Tari Piring is one of the traditional dance in Minangkabau, from Solok, West Sumatra. This dance is played by using the plate as a main medium. Then, the plates are swung with quick movements regular, without departing from the hand grip.

Traditional House

The traditional house of West Sumatra is Rumah Gadang. Rumah Gadang rectangular and divided into two parts, the front and rear. Generally, the longhouse made of wood and a cursory look like stilts with typical roof stands out like a buffalo horn. Another distinctive feature of this custom home is not wearing metal spikes, but using wooden pegs.

Traditional Weapons

Some traditional weapons in West Sumatra such as Karih, Kerambit (in Minang it called kurambiak/karambiak), Belati, Tombak, Ruduih, Piarit. And one the most popular traditional weapon in West Sumatra is Kerambit. Kerambit is a small hand-held knife-shaped curve. Kerambit an original weapon types Meningkabau, West Sumatra. The Kerambit typical very dangerous weapon.

Traditional Costume

Traditional costume of West Sumatra is Batusangkar. In this costume men wear long pants and songket weaving around his body. Clothing worn gold embroidered hand section and collar. And, his head wearing masks named saluak. And women dressed in sacks, topless and songket. The clothes she wore a gold embroidered hand and neck section. In women, the head mounted headgear.

Traditional Music Instruments

Minangkabau form of instrumental music and songs of this area are generally melancholy. It is closely related to the structure of society who have a sense of brotherhood, kinship and love of high hometown supported by habit to go wander. The traditional music instruments in West Sumatra such as Saluang, Bansi, Talempong, Rabab, Sarunai and Gandang tabuik.
